Safari Northern Tanzania
Serengeti NP is one if you travel to Tanzania. See the ‘Great Migration’ of the wildebeest, enjoy the most beautiful sunsets, drive for hours in search of the big five and enjoy fantastic food of a high culinary standard in the ‘middle of nowhere’. You can easily spend three to four days in this wilderness among the wild animals. Before entering the endless plains of the Serengeti, you will start your safari in Arusha NP, a nice warm-up for the rest of the safari. Then you go to the less visited, but very beautiful Manyara NP, a versatile park with savanna, the lake and pristine jungle. On the way to the Serengeti you will pass many Maasai villages. You can ask the guide to visit one of the less visited bomas. After the Serengeti we go to the unique Ngorongoro crater where you will find the most African game in a small area. You end this trip in the rugged Tarangire NP where you encounter many large herds of elephants and baobabs dominate the landscape. In principle, we offer this safari privately, which means that you only travel with your own company with a guide in a land cruiser with panoramic windows and an opening roof.
You start this safari at your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha. Your guide will pick you up with the land cruiser with pop-up roof and you will drive in an hour to the entrance of Arusha NP. After checking in we drive into the park and pass the ‘Little Serengeti’ where buffalo and antelope graze. You will also likely find some rooting warthogs. We drive around the savannah and head through scrubland towards Ngurdoto Crater. Along the way we will hopefully encounter a herd of elephants that are often found here, but are not always easy to see due to the dense undergrowth. On the crater rim we have a nice view of the plain below where buffalo graze and in the background, when it is clear, we can see Mount Meru. Via a wooded area where we encounter many divers, and via open savanna where giraffes graze, we arrive at the Momela Lakes. Here we board a Canadian canoe for an hour of paddling on the lakes. We encounter many water birds such as pelicans and flamingos and if we are lucky there are hippos. After the canoe trip we drive to a beautiful view point for our picnic lunch. From here you can look in all directions and if it is clear you also have a beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro. After lunch we drive around the lakes to see more waterfowl and other grazers. After this we drive slowly to the exit of the park along the foot of Mount Meru. From here we drive to Ilboru lodge in Arumeru where we will enjoy a delicious three-course dinner. When we are back in time we can also take a dip in the pool.
Another possibility for an excursion on this day is a walking safari with a ranger in the park. You will encounter giraffes, buffalo, antelope and divers. If you really succeeded, elephants too.
After a delicious breakfast we leave today for Lake Manyara NP. After a few hours we arrive at the entrance. After checking in we drive through forest area in search of tree-climbing lions. We enjoy a picnic lunch in the park. After this we drive via various detours along Lake Manyara and we pass the savannah area where we mainly see grazers and giraffes. At the edge of the forest you are lucky if you encounter an elephant or more. At the end of the day we will pass the hippo pool where we will see hippos and many water birds. After this exciting day in the versatile park we drive to Isoitok Camp, a luxury tent camp in the middle of the Maasai area. Here we enjoy a culinary high-quality dinner with delicious wine. In the nights we hear the sound of howling hyenas.
After breakfast we leave for the majestic Serengeti. On the way we pass a viewpoint with fantastic views of Lake Manyara. We pass the entrance to the Ngorongoro Protected Area and drive over the crater rim of the Ngorongoro Crater to the endless plains of the Serengeti. Arriving at the entrance on Naabi Hill, we enjoy our picnic lunch. After this we drive slowly towards Seronera and along the way we pass the so-called cups where often lions are bathing in the sun. Hopefully today we will encounter a leopard near the Seronera river. At sunset we arrive at Zawadi Camp. We enjoy a drink there by the campfire while the sun colors the horizon red. Afterwards we enjoy a delicious dinner and then sleep under the most beautiful starry sky ever. Enjoy the nighttime sounds of Africa.
Today we have all day in the Serengeti. That gives us enough time to look for large herds of lions, the wildebeest migration, leopards and cheetahs. But along the way we also encounter many gazelles, impalas, all kinds of birds, zebra, giraffes, buffalo and elephants. The Serengeti is really the pinnacle for an African safari. If you’re really lucky, you’ll also come across a rhinoceros, so you can see the big five in one day. We look for a nice spot in the park for our picnic lunch. You can also do this at the visitor center where you can read about the history of the Serengeti. At the end of the day we drive back to Zawadi Camp for another beautiful evening and night under the African starry sky.
We get up early today, have a quick cup of tea or coffee and head out before sunrise. At this hour you can see the most beautiful scenes and you have the best chance of seeing a ‘catch’. Wouldn’t it be cool to see a lion chasing a wildebeest? We enjoy the most beautiful sunrise ever and drive along the Seronera River to see more wildlife. At the end of the morning we return to camp for an extensive brunch before taking the road back to the protected Ngorongoro area. We pass the crater rim and today stay in Karatu, the town just outside Ngorongoro. Ngorongoro Farmhouse is nestled among the coffee plantations and here we enjoy a happy hour followed by dinner by the fire. It can be quite cold here in the evenings, but you can even find the fire burning in your room when you go to bed.
We leave early again today after an early breakfast so that we can drive into the unique Ngorongoro Crater in time. The crater has a very high concentration of wildlife. There is a good chance that you will encounter whole families of lions with cubs. Furthermore, the elephants here have huge tusks. Other animals you will find here are buffalo, hippos, flamingos, cheetahs and hyenas. We go around the whole crater and hopefully we will see a rhinoceros or more in case we missed it in the Serengeti. After half a day in the crater, we leave the area and drive to the beautiful Maramboi Lodge. We arrive there in time to take a dip in the pool overlooking Lake Manyara. Drinks and snacks are brought to the pool during sunset. A magical moment. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious dinner inside or outside on the deck of the nicely decorated dining room. We sleep in nicely furnished rooms that are partly made of canvas and partly made of stone.
We wake up to the ‘hhhh’ of the wildebeest around our tent. When the sun rises, everything around us turns gold enhanced by the sound of the morning deaf. We have breakfast in the sun and leave for a final game drive. Today we go in Tarangire NP in search of large herds of elephants. Along the way we encounter all kinds of game around huge baobab trees. The chance to see big cats here is not as great as in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, but that makes a final game drive very good here. We enjoy our lunch overlooking the Tarangire River. At the end of the afternoon we drive back to Arusha or Moshi and say goodbye after a fantastic experience in the Northern Parks of Tanzania.
Extend this trip with a tour to the famous rivercrossings in North Serengeti, a climb of Kilimanjaro, a trip to the less visited West Kilimanjaro and/or a beach holiday in Zanzibar.
