MARION’S FIRST SAFARI

A Serengeti Safari: Discovering the Heart of Africa

In the crisp January air of 2006, a mesmerizing photobook shared by a colleague ignited a spark within us, beckoning us towards the untamed beauty of East Africa. With eager hearts and adventurous spirits, we embarked on a journey of a lifetime to Kenya and Tanzania, where the allure of safari adventures and breathtaking landscapes awaited. Our odyssey began in the vibrant metropolis of Nairobi, where we found solace in the colonial charm of the Panafric Hotel. Exploring the bustling streets, we immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of Kenyan culture, from the captivating exhibits of the train museum to the spirited rhythms of an African church service.

With anticipation building, we boarded a shuttle bus bound for Moshi, our gateway to the wilds of Tanzania. As we traversed the rugged terrain of Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania, we embraced the spirit of adventure, eager to embark on our first safari experience. Settling into a quaint guesthouse, we relished the simplicity of budget travel, finding comfort amidst the fortress-like walls and dimly lit corridors. Yet, our excitement was tinged with apprehension as my travel partner succumbed to a sudden bout of queasiness—a stark reminder of the unpredictability of travel.

Undeterred by the unexpected setback, we eagerly awaited our safari guide, who arrived in a weathered Peugeot 503, ready to lead us into the heart of Tanzania’s wilderness. With a sense of “TIA” – This is Africa – guiding us, we embarked on a journey filled with anticipation and wonder. Arriving at Fig Lodge, our home away from home, we were greeted with unexpected hospitality—a cozy room replacing the anticipated camping accommodations. Despite my travel partner’s illness, we remained steadfast in our determination to immerse ourselves in the safari experience that lay ahead. Venturing into Lake Manyara National Park, our senses were awakened by the sights and sounds of the African savannah. From graceful giraffes to majestic elephants, each encounter filled us with awe and reverence for the natural world around us.

Journeying through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, we were treated to panoramic vistas reminiscent of a painter’s canvas—rolling hills, vibrant red soil, and herds of grazing wildlife painting a picture of untamed beauty. Descending into the boundless plains of the Serengeti, we were greeted by an abundance of life—herds of wildebeest and zebras stretching as far as the eye could see. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we reveled in the magic of the African wilderness. Camping beneath the stars, with only canvas separating us from the wild, we fell asleep to the symphony of the savannah—a chorus of crickets and the distant roar of lions serving as our lullaby. In those moments, surrounded by the raw beauty of Africa, we felt truly alive. Looking back on our Serengeti safari, we are filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared and the memories we created. From the bustling streets of Nairobi to the vast plains of the Serengeti, our journey was a testament to the transformative power of travel and the enduring allure of the African continent. As we bid farewell to Tanzania, we carry with us the spirit of adventure and the promise of future explorations, knowing that the call of the wild will always beckon us back to Africa’s embrace.
